So I’ve come across my first issue that can move. The “pods” that I came across are likely some sort of fungus (thanks Seaton for the comment!) that isn’t going to do any major damage.
However, the slugs have found my lettuce! Here is one I found today:
Now don’t get me wrong, I have a soft spot for slugs in certain situations … but not when it comes to my garden. I want Nina and I to enjoy our lettuce, not this guy. In terms of what to do … I don’t have a great answer yet. I would prefer not to kill them with poison … or at all really. We’ve heard that broken egg shells act as a natural deterrent so are going to give that a try. They don’t like the sharp edges. Below is a shot of our natural barbed wire. Who knows if it works. I wonder why they wouldn’t just avoid the shells. Who knows?

Hi! Found your blog thru Seaton. This is such a great idea! We’ve started saving our eggshells. I’ve seen slugs on the sidewalk, but none in the beds yet.

Comment by Kate June 7, 2010 @ 5:01 pmHi Kate, thanks for the comment! I was out thinning plants tonight … scary to pull things out when I’m uncertain about what I’m doing! I am still fighting slugs … need to neat more eggs I think and have them more dense or have them tightly around my thinned plants … i think that might be the best bet. Great shots of your new beds … looks like they get nice light. What are you going to plant?
Comment by wfjohn June 8, 2010 @ 10:33 pmWe’re doing a crazy variety of things – I’ve got some cherry tomatoes (three varieties), gypsy peppers and english cucumbers (all from seedlings). Then I planted chard, chives, basil, tah tsai (a leafy green), radishes, carrots and scallions.
I’m trying the “square foot gardening” method – we’ll see if that works
I am very excited though – just saw the first flower on a tomato plant!
